Editors Notes
1. Julian served a four-year apprenticeship at the National Library of Wales, working under John Bowen who had been trained by George Fisher at The Gregynog Press. He was Head of the Conservation Section at the library from 1980 until his retirement in 2010. He now works from home where he undertakes commissioned fine bindings and some book conservation.
2. Julian was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 1996 and has exhibited and been commissioned both at home and abroad. He is an accredited member of the Institute of Paper Conservation and of the National Council for Conservation-Restoration.
3. The Society of Bookbinders is a UK-based educational charity dedicated to traditional and contemporary bookbinding and to the preservation and conservation of the printed and written word.
4. The society is organised into eight UK regions plus an overseas group. The UK regions hold regular meetings at which masterclasses, lectures and demonstrations are given on various bookbinding or binding-related subjects and techniques. The regions also hold social events, organise visits and exhibitions and represent the SoB at local book and craft fairs.
5. At a national and international level, the society organises a biennial Education & Training Conference accompanied by an International Bookbinding Competition. A smaller E&T Seminar is held in non-Conference years.
6. Members receive regular Newsletters as well as the society's flagship journal, BOOKBINDER, which is published annually. The SoB also produces educational and documentary bookbinding DVDs.
